About Laredo
Historical Laredo
Laredo was born twenty years before the American Revolution. Founded in 1755 under the Spanish crown it was christened Villa de San Agustine de Laredo after the name of a settlement in the Spanish province of Santander.
In the early years Laredo endured fierce Comanche and Apache attacks. Revolution against Spain swept Mexico in 1810. Ultimately Spain was defeated and the flag of Mexico flew over Laredo.
Less than a quarter of a century later the Texas Revolution against Mexico exploded and Santa Ana's armies were streaming by Laredo heading north to quash the revolt. The Texans prevailed and the Republic of Texas was created.
Laredo was often in a no-man's land in the wake of the Texas Revolution since the border between Mexico and The Republic of Texas was in dispute. In 1840 Laredo became the capital of The Republic of the Rio Grande which was a coalition of northern Mexican states and South Texas. The Republic lasted only a year before Mexico defeated it in a bitter campaign.
The Lone Star State of Texas joined the Union in 1845. Within the year the Mexican/American War erupted and was swirling around Laredo. The U.S. Army established a camp at Laredo that within two years was named Fort McIntosh. (Laredo Community College is now located on that site and several historical buildings from old Fort McIntosh are preserved there.)
Many of the graduates of West Point who got their battlefield experience as officers in the Mexican/American War later became renowned generals in the American Civil War. Robert E. Lee was one of those officers posted at Ft. McIntosh. An outcome of the Mexican/American War was that the Rio Grande River was established as the border between Mexico and the United States.
At the outbreak of the Civil War, Texas joined the South in seceding from the Union and fought with the Confederacy. A confederate regiment was raised in Laredo under Colonel Santos Benavides which played a major role in maintaining the flow of southern cotton into Mexico and from there to Europe thereby evading the Yankee blockades of Confederate ports and keeping money pumping into the Confederacy. After the South was defeated, the Stars and Stripes flew over Laredo again.
The railroad arrived in the 1880's spurring Laredo's reputation as a trading hub between Mexico and the Uniterd States. Although during that time the ranching country outside Laredo was still often the wild and woolly west where outlaw gangs roamed, Laredo had an opera house that seated 3,000 folks.
Since its incepton, Laredo's economy had been tied to ranching. Later with the irrigation of land from the Rio Grande, Laredo became known for its vegetable farming and its produce was sent all over the U. S. In the 20th century oil and gas exploration and production fuled Laredo's economy.
For nearly 160 years Laredo has been THE major nexus of Mexican and U.S. trade. It is the largest inland port in the United States
Seven flags have flown over Laredo - Spain, France ( during the age of the explorers) Mexico, the Republic of Texas, The Republic of the Rio Grande, The Confederate States of America and our Old Glory.
Laredo has always had deep and sentimental ties with Mexico. It is equally proud of the role that it has played in American history with its dedicated VFW's and week-long flamboyant Washington's Birthday Celebration.
